Spirit of the Earth Wheat Weaving
People have been using natural materials to enhance their lives, homes and to use for their spiritual needs since ancient times. They honored the goddess ‘s and god’s for the Bounty of the Earth, whether hunting wild animals or cultivating grains, called Corn in the Old World. These ancient people were closely linked to Mother Earth.
It was believed that the Spirit of the Corn lived in the ripening fields. When the Corn was ripe the spirit would retreat from the advancing reapers. As the last sheaf was to be cut a ceremony would be reformed that would hold the Spirit in the Last shock to be cut. Where it would be held throughout the winter, protected and nurtured. Corn dollies where then made of the last sheaf to bring Prosperity Love, Happiness, Health and Protection into the homes of the people.
When spring came again the corn dollies would be broken up and the Spirit would then be returned to the field as the first seeds were planted, to ensure a Bountiful Harvest for the next year. Thus insuring the continuing “Cycle of Life”
This centuries old art form is being kept alive by a dedicated but small group of people. I am happy to be one of them. Each piece is made by me here in the USA with my own two hands with respect for our Mother Earth I am grateful to channel her energies.
