St. Brigid's Cross

St. Bridgid’s day, February 1 is celebrated throughout Ireland, the crosses are hung in homes to invoke protection from fire and the elements, sickness and disease as well as evil spirits.

In many parts of Ireland the cross would be presented to a new couple at their wedding by their mothers, it was thought this was the last motherly  act of protection she would perform as the young couple starts their new life together.  Along with this blessing:

Memories warm our hearts, and give us comfort in times of sorrow.  This cross was created to help ease the pain and suffering of the loss of a Loved One.   The Cross is woven from a braid called Glory which represents clasped hands.  The straw spray represents sunlight and warmth.  And the rose and white ribbon symbolize love and purity.The old Irish folk saying of Live in my heart and pay no rent seems to lend itself well to the thought of keeping TheirLoving Spirit with you always.
